2013 Bee Colonies

We added another medium honey super to the colony on the left.  It seems to be much stronger than the colony on the right but we have checked both hives for brood, babies, and both have brood in them so we are hoping the colony on the right catches up to the other one.   The reason we added another super to the colony on the left is the first honey super we added was about 80% full and my mentor this year, Ziggy, said there is likely 40,000 bees in that hive.

We are hoping that 2013 is a better year for the bees as last year, our initial year, we lost both hives.  Based on adding the honey super things are lookign better already.  We may actually have some honey available for sale this Fall.

Honey is a wonderful benefit and one we hope to add to our on farm offerings but the true value comes from the pollination that they provide to our crops. We have planted about 400 pumpkin plants this year and are hoping for a bumper crop!!!
