Blueberries

One thing that has grown well in my Catskill Mountain soil has been my blueberries.  We started in 2009 planting about 45 plants per year and this is the first year we have any harvestable crop.  We have been planting three types Chandler, Reka and Blueray.  They are of varying sizes and harvesting times to space out our harvest.

As with most crops soil preparation is the first step towards a successful harvest.  With the blueberries we double dug the soil in the planting hole, add agricultural sulphur to drive down the PH, and amended the soil with both finished compost and peat moss.  My plan is to check the soil PH this Fall to determine if I need to add any more sulphur.  In the meantime I will keep checking on them and enjoying the tasty treats.  This is another product we hope to have available for sale in our store next year for our customers.
