Onions and potatoes

As we continue to work on supplying a more consistent and diverse product line to our customers I am happy with my onion harvest so far.  We grew potatoes last year and again this year but I have never grown onions and these Copra onions from Johnny’s were started inside under lights from seed, transferred to the unheated high tunnel and then planted in the fields in plastic.  I think they need a few more weeks to come up to better size but I have been picking them for my use and have sold a few to customers.  I will definitely be growing the onions again next year and plan to plant more for customer availability.

The potatoes were a dissappointemnt this year.  Mostly my own fault as I did not plant them until mid May and this was about 4-6 weeks late so they never had a chance to get established before the summer heat and weed pressure.  As you can see I have potatoes for myself and have sold a bit but had hoped for much more for sale in the store.  Ah well, there is always next year and next year I am going to buy a hiller for my tractor so we can effectively till and hill the potatoes when needed.
