Piglets II

One of the Yorkshire Gilt’s had piglets last week. Like our Tamworth piglets born two weeks ago she had 5 piglets as well. Both litters were fathered by the same Boar so possibly that is the reason for the same number of piglets.   Just as with the other litter we will not be clipping teeth but did notch their ears to identify the litter they are from and gave them each a number.  It appears that both litters had 3 males and 3 females so next week we will castrate the males to preent any unwanted pregnanacies.  I am still unsure if Boar Taint is a real thing.  Boar taint is a theory that meat from a butchered boar tastes differently because is it was not castrated.  One of my Spring Piglets is a non-castrated male so I should have a better idea about this theory in a few months after he is butchered.

If anyone is interested in a piglet they should be ready to leave the farm in late October.  Any pigs not sold as piglets will be raised through the winter and butchered in the Spring to stock the freezer for on farm sales next Spring and Summer.  Pasture Raised Heritage pork!!
